This is more than a bit of sorrow for the foreign politics for the great U.S. of A. I'll keep it short for the infrastructure of vardaska as far a IDs, passports, borders, "democracy", terrorist inhibited groups, exported (foreign) policies and whatever else your mind can think of, from a 'country' like that. It has the standards that the CIA/NSA and Foreign Affairs require so that they do not require visas any more. xlent.
I DEMAND that MY COUNTRY (HELLAS) BE ALWAYS SUBJECT TO VISA REQUIREMENT, AND A VISA FEE OF OVER 10,000.00USD FOR ANY PERSON THAT WANT TO VISIT USA FROM GREECE.
it's the only decent thing that I can Imagine, and that comes from a person that spend half of his life at the northeast states. WARNING to US foreign affairs : remove all plants from the offices, or they'll grow you out of the building, with that massive ammounts of fertilizers that you dispose up there a.k.a bullshit. I got a visa, any time I wanted to! Why change it? Plus, you have altered my business life, long ago, and I found ways to get what I want from the states, without travelling there. I always get, the tech people and the representatives, to travel over here, at their immediate expence cause they want to sell. I'm ok. I just travel to the rest of the world. And the world is BIG! never managed australia, but I'll do it as soon as I get a good excuse for myself (and the wife).

for starters, download this zip, get the hosts text file and place it in your systems (details at the html page) even if you use a linux or a MAC box you can use this file replacing the original 'hosts' file of your system. If you run M$ you'd better disable for good DNS client service. That file works. Works good, better than expected. Do it.

a.You browse the net, happy as a clam, and you click on a page that you shouldnt have. You dont know that, you realize it after its too late.
b.You click happilly around and every click you do, somebody is watching. Actually is google, but I shouldnt say that. Having that hosts file, you actually 'ground' most of the tracking done by your favorite search engine. I would suggest to use BING.com, but I despise their existance so much that I cannot actually accept such a suggestion.
Even the great firefox (that I use on all my OSs - M$,Ubuntu,OSX) has a very close encounter with googly. Well, for the least of all evils, I still use firefox.
Always spoof your mac address. In m$ is simple, under the adapter properties, where you just dont enter the columns of the mac address and in linux ifconfig does the job nicely. Also all modern routers (with web interface, not the useless ones with the IOS programming wonna be language, charge the hell out of end user and take a week for something that can be done in 10 minutes - otherwise cannot justify the charge) have a simple window to leave as default or enter your own mac address. To be neat pick from here http://standards.ieee.org/regauth/oui/oui.txt a manufacturer code, and add your last 8 bytes of any hex combination you like. Just be smart at the way and place you use them.
Dont use closed source or propriatery software and/or operating system. If you do, you'll paying tooooo much, be less productive, more frustrated and never learn how to use computers.
Its like saying that you visited the country side, at the time that you have taken the highway, went through tunnels as to get to VillageView or AltaVista or any name. YOU just drove to a place and actually missed the country side but the village you just arrived to.
If you dont want to know computers, just hire a technician/ help desk to fix/fill your menus. Its still cheaper (short /long run, in any way you see it if you actually count the beans)

microsoft again - service packs
I am pretty sure there is a conspiracy. Cant prove it, cause I dont have the personal data following mac addresses and ips of people foruming and blogging, but I have an idea that m$ is paying trillions to have people post that their installation works flawlessly and that the service pack updates - at worst - gave no performance or whatever issues.
As an admin, ex system programmer, computer designer /engineer with over a quarter of a century experience with their products on brand+noname h/w, there has been nothing flawless. Lately, I trusted them to install xp sp3. I did on a number or various manufacturers h/w. They ALL running now as fast as melassa in alaska during the winter. All, like 100% of them. 90% of them brand new with 4gigs of ram and real core 2. Workstations is the h/w i'm referring, did no tests/applications/observations on rack systems.
Its like Σvista=erase them in greek. They work great, after all crash and booms during install, after decrapifying, after endless hard disk accesses and upgrades... as long as you install nothing but the build in s/w... like explorer and mail. Ok, firefox works too. A "fellow" technician urged me to immediately turn of UAC, as thats what he suggests to his clients. They are on the 'right' track I guess.
So, I'm working m$ since 1980 and I always have trouble, I'm either a failure (not according to my clients that pay me more/hour than their managers) or there is something wrong with software from m$. I -once again- remind you that m$ makes applications and not OSs that they wish they make. The only os they had was DOS that was a dumpster-dive-right. Something like a copyleft or clopyleft (thats greek too) and then the one they bought -semi finished- and named WNT as a nice VMS parody (not just in name, but in OS hard core design).
I want to keep my options open, so I spent all my time using UBUNTU/a Debian Linux made for people that are too old to handle Gentoo [or something like that]. After all I can start writing sysop s/w again and not be tied up to any hidden system technology and have access to any possible bit in my file system. Dont you hate it when you have no access to data on your disk, "for your own protection?". I wonna know whats in there!
my 2 cent and a personal opinion to contemporary O.S. matters.
PS for (L)Users: computers are not made for you. If you cant handle it, go back home and milk your cows for a living. We glorify the 21 century for the technological aspects and you cant handle a different icon or even an ambient desktop wallpaper. But you get certifications for computer literacy by prestigious (!) organizations. Please, gimme a break.... ohhh and when a pop up reports something, READ IT before clicking the OK button. Thats where you need training and certification.

flash animation block and bundled software
I just had it today. Installed flash block, so my pc runs at regular cycles. Before that my ultra good dual duo cpu was running as fast as melassa during winter in alaska. If I do not watch their ads, I will not get free content. WHO CARES. I can buy the newspaper, and its gonna cost me cheaper than buying a mainframe to read the news cause with all the flash animations and scripts running in there, my cpu heats up, and the cooler runs at top speed and there is no peace or quiet reading the paper (tft/lcd/crt/whatever screen).
Same with that brand new asus laptop with a 20+ monitor. The prebundle software, is taking so much cpu and memory, that I need a second laptop to run my applications. You could remove them, but they are like the replacement of m$ apps, like the power management UI etc etc. So you dont want to remove them cause you can(?)t get the drivers... without them !!! The brand is on the system, with big font letters. Whats the reason branding the app s/w? besides making a lousy job. BTW toshibas are crowded too, but the apps are lighter. THATs MY OPINION, like it or NOT.
